At Kozak Micro Adjusters, we can supply a wide range of products to our customers, and that includes press fit bushings and slip fit bushings. Both press fit bushings and slip fit bushings can be used with a diverse variety of materials and applications, making them essential components in diverse industries. In general, bushings are used in place of tapped holes.
Let’s take a look at press fit bushings and slip fit bushings via our handy chart and our detailed breakdown.
Characteristic | Press Fit Bushings | Slip Fit Bushings |
---|---|---|
Application | Extremely tight pressure on hole location | Larger productions and operations |
Replacement | Not intended for replacement | Designed for easy replacement |
Mounting Hole Size | 0.0002" to 0.0003" smaller than bushing diameter | 0.0005" to 0.002" larger than bushing diameter |
Alignment | Fixed | Allows for precise alignment |
Press Fit Bushings vs. Slip Fit Bushings
Press fit bushings, also known as interference fit bushings, are used for applications where the pressure is extremely tight on a hole location with components held together via friction. There is an intentional interference between the mating surfaces, leading to the considerable friction produced. Press fit bushing mounting is commonly used where the bushing won’t need to be replaced.
Slip fit bushings are generally used in large-scale productions and operations. In some industries, the slip fit design allows bushings to rotate freely, distinguishing them from press fit bushings, but in our applications for clients we want a firm hold. Therefore, we recommend a slip fit bushing used in conjunction with a quality adhesive to lock it into place.
This method is often recommended for large-scale projects because the mounting hole tolerance does not need to be as precise as press fit, and dropping in a bushing with some adhesive is easier than setting up a fixture to install a press fit bushing.
Press fit bushings are often used in automotive, aerospace, heavy machinery, and permanent assembly applications, as they are more suited for the high stress, vibration, and heavy loads these applications require.
Slip fit bushings with adhesive can be somewhat permanent to permanent depending on the adhesive that is used. A weak- to medium-strength adhesive would generally allow for the bushing to be removed with some effort, while a strong adhesive would create a permanent bond that would not allow for removal.
Press Fit Bushing Mount and Slip Fit Bushing Mounting
Both press fit bushings and slip fit bushings can be secured and mounted. When it comes to press fit bushing mounting, the hole should be .0002” to .0003” smaller than the barrel diameter of the bushing. When it comes to slip fit bushing mounting, the hole should be .0005” to .002” larger than the barrel diameter of the slip fit bushing, including the adhesive to hold the slip fit in place.
Here are some general tips for slip fit bushing mount and press fit bushing mounting:
- Consider a jig bored or ground mounting hole for improved roundness
- Never hammer press fit bushings or slip fit bushings into the proper place, as typically an arbor press works best
- Keep the necessary tools sharp to ensure successful operation
